The first and most important gardening tool. A good pair of garden / work gloves is essential for keeping you hands safe while you work on your garden. I prefer these gloves here as they have a snug fit, are nice and grippy and made from bamboo.
Knee Pads are something I never go without as there are lots of instances wearing sitting on your knees is required. I prefer the wearable kind as it is one less thing to carry around and then they are always where I need them. This is a great light weight knee pad for gardening. There are lots of great knee pads that are not wearable as well if you prefer!
A good garden trowel is a must. This comes in hand for transplanting, weeding, you name it! Look for something well built like this trowel from Cate’s Garden. It even has a handy measurement marker on the back to help with planting depth. Definilty don’t forget to add this to your gardening tools list.
A sharp pair of pruning shears is key for pruning your plants to give them shape, remove dead material and keep them healthy. This lightweight aluminum pair with carbon blades will last you a life time. You want a pair that will stand up to a lot of use while also keeping a sharp blade. A sharp blade is essential to a clean cut to prevent anymore stress on the plant than you have to.
This Black Iron Hori Hori gardening knife multi-tool is my new favorite garden gadget. It has a very sharp smooth blade a serrated edge. You can use this for pruning and harvesting as well as cutting rope or other things needed in your garden. It has measurements for planting depth. You can also use it for digging out weeds or transplanting. It’s a great all around helper and comes with a fun little carrying case to it is always with you!
Being able to easily water your plants is important to keep or gardening manageable and enjoyable. Watering is one of those tasks that is often done daily. Have a long hose to reach all of your garden as well as a multi-function nozzle makes this an easy task!
This type of hoe I have found to work the best. The long handle allows you to stay standing. The loop gets under the weed and uproots it. The push pull motion makes the work quick and efficient. You can use the corners to work around edges of plants easily. This is my favourite style for quick gardening weeding.
A heavy duty wheel barrow is one of the most useful things you can have in your garden tool shed. It can do a ton of the heavy lifting for you whether you are hauling dirt, mulch, rocks, bricks or you need help moving pots around or other awkward large items it will save you lots of time and a sore back! Choosing a heavy duty one that can handle quite a bit of weight was essential for my uses. The weight of things you can carry in them quickly adds up and you don’t want it collapsing or warping while you are tying to carry your load.

A garden fork, pitch fork, potato fork makes digging up things like carrots, potatoes, beets or any other root vegetable super easy. You don’t have to risk ripping the tops off and not getting your harvest. It also comes in handy for breaking up dirt, mulch, compost. I love one that has flat tines like this one!
A spade style shovel with a long handle makes moving dirt, mulch or any other material around easy. You can also use this to dig larger holes for transplanting. I good heavy duty one like one with last you a lifetime of hard work in the garden.
I prefer this style of rake as it’s a little more robust than just a leaf rake. It has a solid metal head and tines which can move around heavier materials. I use it for smoothing out the soil in the garden, or mulch around my beds. It has the added benefits of leaves as well.

Here are some additional “nice to have” gardening tools for when you are ready to upgrade or when there is more money in the budget.
